Mirror

The white dovecote that stands alone
Among the vines has many doors

The garden cellar has a roof of grass
Workers work in quiet sheds

Among the barrels of fermenting wine
And decades later, your name on a mirrored sign

On which the gold paint is peeling but the name
Is still clear, it is this reflection that draws me near

The smoke has cleared, no engines run
The station is in ruins

Time lies scattered on the floor
Tall weeds hide the sleepers

A hall in memory of a drowned young man
In a town now flooded by signs and voices

An old silence remains and is still there to hear
It is this silence that draws me near

And I look into this mirror
Called Reynella

The air was cooler and strange with fennel
When we rode across the bridge
